Culture Day at East Oldham Methodist Church

Earlier this year, East Oldham Methodist’s Agents of Change took part in some research with the Methodist Church about what makes a welcoming church and what issues are facing young people at the moment.

The children and young people felt that the diversity of the church was a real strength, with everyone being welcome no matter where they’ve come from. Unfortunately they also said that racism is still an issue in the local area.

With both of these things in mind they decided to organise a culture day on Sunday 31st May. The Agents of Change led the service based on Revelation 7:9-10. They reminded everyone that our many different cultures should be celebrated as they make us unique but we should remember that we are all one in Jesus.

It was a really special day for everyone in church. There were Bible readings, prayers and songs in languages spoken by church members. The Sunday School learnt a new song called “I am a Citizen” and had everybody joining in and dancing along.

Everybody came dressed in something to represent their culture and brought a traditional dish for a bring and share meal. Thank you to the amazing Agents of Change for organising such a wonderful day.
