Listening, Mapping, and Imagining God’s Future Together

What a joyful and encouraging day it was as around 80 people from nine Methodist churches across the Blackpool and South Fylde Circuit gathered at The Drive Methodist Church for our Mission Growth Planning Day. Using the Methodist Church resource Our Church’s Future Story, the day was filled with energy, openness, prayer, and a shared desire to listen for where God is leading us next.

We began by praying together discerningly, intentionally placing God at the centre of everything we did. As we reflected on who God is, what God means to us, and how we approach God, there was a deep sense of attentiveness and trust. We also named what we need from God at this time in our journey, and it was clear that the Holy Spirit was already at work among us, shaping the day with grace and purpose.

Using the Methodist Way of Life map, we enthusiastically explored all that is already happening across our churches and in the communities around them. As we mapped out our worship, learning and caring, service, evangelism, and justice, many people were surprised and encouraged by just how much faithful, loving mission is already taking place. The room buzzed with conversation, recognition, and thanksgiving for God’s work among us.

Most of the day was spent working within our own church groups, allowing rich and honest conversations to flourish. Later, as we moved into smaller mixed groups, we practised how we might talk about faith and church with others in our communities. These sessions were full of laughter, creativity, and growing confidence, helping people feel more ready and excited to share what God is doing in their lives and churches.

Of course, no Methodist gathering would be complete without good food and fellowship! Sharing lunch together gave us time to build relationships across the circuit, deepen connections, and simply enjoy being God’s people together. Throughout the day we prayed, worshipped, and offered praise and blessing to God, reminding us that mission is always rooted in joy and gratitude.

The day was led by Rev Caroline Ainger, Mission Area Lead and Deputy Chair for Liverpool Plus, alongside Mel Clarke from the Learning Network. Their leadership brought clarity, warmth, encouragement, and gentle challenge, helping us to dream boldly while remaining grounded in prayer and practice.

As we look back on the day, there is a strong sense of hope, momentum, and thankfulness. We leave encouraged by one another, excited about what God is already doing, and expectant about how God will continue to lead us as we grow in confidence, faith, and mission together across our circuit.
