Our Story, Our Song: A Journey Through Lent – Week Three

Third Week of Lent – Reflection by Samuel Rimmer, District Digital Enabler

“When I survey the wondrous cross on which the Prince of Glory died”

There is something deeply Lenten about this hymn. Written by Isaac Watts, its words invite us not to rush past the cross, but to stand still before it to survey it thoughtfully and prayerfully.

In the busyness of life, we can become used to the symbol of the cross. It appears on jewellery, in our church buildings and displayed in our homes. But in this hymn, we are asked to truly look again and to notice the cost, love and the sacrifice.

“Love so amazing, so divine, demands my soul, my life, my all.”

Lent is a season of laying things down. Sometimes that means giving something up. Sometimes it means letting go of pride and distractions. As we journey towards the cross, this hymn gently reminds us that our faith is not casual. It is a response to love that holds nothing back.

When we “survey” the cross, we see both the depth of human brokenness and the immeasurable grace of God. We are humbled, “my richest gain I count but loss”.

Perhaps this week, you might take a few moments simply to pause and picture the cross and behold the sacrifice that was made on your behalf.

Wonder

  • When you picture the cross, what do you notice or feel?
  • What might you be invited to lay down this Lent?
  • What does it mean for you to give not just something, but yourself, in response to God’s love?

Prayer

Lord Jesus,
As I survey your wondrous cross,
quiet my heart and steady my gaze.
Teach me to see your love more clearly,
and help me to offer my life more fully.
Amen.
