Reading: 1 John 4 v. 16–21

Notes:

As Advent reaches its fulfilment, the words of 1 John draw us into the heart of Christian faith: “God is love, and those who live in love live in God, and God lives in them.” This statement is not sentimental but profoundly theological. It declares that love is not simply what God does but who God is – the very life of God reaching out toward creation. In Christ, that love becomes flesh, entering human experience not in triumph but in vulnerability.

The Incarnation shows that divine love seeks sanctuary with us and among us. God’s dwelling is not found in places of prestige or control but in the fragile spaces of human life – in the home, the shelter, the manger. To live in love is therefore to become sanctuary ourselves: to make room for others, to offer safety, belonging, and recognition where the world too easily excludes.

When John writes that “perfect love drives out fear,” he speaks of a love that dismantles the boundaries fear creates. Fear divides; love gathers. Fear excludes; love welcomes. This is the shape of God’s own presence in the world – a love that restores relationship and reclaims every person as held and valued.

On the threshold of Christmas, we are reminded that love is both revelation and vocation. In Christ, the Life-Light of God shines into the shadows, and we are called to reflect that light –  to become places of sanctuary where others encounter the nearness and safety of divine love.

Wonder:

Where might God be creating spaces of sanctuary in our communities today?

How might living without fear enable us to offer love that truly makes room for others?

Prayer:

God of love who dwells among us,
You make Your home not in power but in tenderness.
Teach us to be places of sanctuary for one another –
safe in Your love, open to Your light,
and ready to welcome the stranger as we would welcome Christ Himself.
May Your perfect love cast out fear
and fill the world with the warmth of Your presence.
Through Jesus Christ, Love made flesh. Amen.
